Arundo Removal297 Acre Arundo Removal Project (Application Submitted, Pending Approval)

This project will consist of the removal of invasive plant species along a 297 acre City-owned portion of the Santa Clara River. The major invasive plants found along the Santa Clara River include Arundo and Tamarix. Arundo is a giant weed that spreads rapidly, forming large contiguous root masses covering several acres, effectively crowding out native riparian vegetation. It uses three to four times the water of willows and other riparian vegetation, wasting precious groundwater. The Val Verde fire in 2003 spread, and eventually made its way to Stevenson Ranch, due to dry Arundo in the Santa Clara River. Firefighters direct wildfires to rivers as natural fire breaks; Arundo causes the exact opposite effect. Tamarix is a woody plant species that is long-lived and can tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions. It can replace or displace native plants, damaging habitat for river animals, especially when the area has been altered by human activities. Strands of tamarix cause the surface soil to become highly saline, preventing other native plant species from surviving. The increase in salinity can contribute to the chloride content of the surface flows.
